Motion Studies (Air)

Motion Studies(Air) is one of a seris of works that explore the sound and kinetics of motion - the way motion and sound work together. In this case, the work explores the sound of moving air. Air is the medium of sound transmssion - without air there can be no sound. But air istself also has the ability to be in motion, and to make sound while moving - to be disturbed when playing along surfaces and moving through cavities, along wires and around corners and buildings. The source material which this work is based on is a recording of a stone wall along the Western coast of Ireland - an empty elemental place where the only sound on hears for hours on end if the sound of moving air playing aroung the rock fences that criss-cross the landscape. The piece is highly spatial, with the air traveling wildly back and forth along the line of speakers. A stereo recording such as the one you are hearing can only approximate the spatial experience in the gallery.
