Web Programming in Flash
In-Class Presentations
Throughout the class, we will be looking at WWW-based work which ustilizes programminig in some significant way, and each member of the class will present a synopsis and critique of a WWW site and will lead a class-wide discussion of the site. We will start this process in week 4. Sites should be chosen from then sources I have listed below (or other sites can be presented in class, as long as you clear them with me first). I am specifically asking you to critique www sites primarily intended to be artworks (I use this term in a very loose sense) which are made specifically for the Web, not design company portfolio pages, commercial sites, etc. There are doubtlessly many other sources of good on-line exhibitions, etc. that I don't list here - please let me know of your additions to my list, and I will gladly consider adding them! But, the sites you choose must come from one the sources below. The process will happen in two stages:
First, mail me with a list of at least five, and no more than ten "favorites" that you have found from the sources below. As there as so many sites to look at, this will allow your classmates to look through a list of what you consider to be the most interesting sites you have found. This is due in week 4.
Second, by week 6, you must choose a site to present to the class, and be ready to lead a discussion/critique. From week 6 through week 9 or 10 we will be doing 2 or 3 presentations each day. Before each presentation, each person in the class must look over the site, and prepare notes on it for our discussion.
Here is the Site-list of sources to choose your presentations from.
Email me (sdecker@artic.edu) with the site you have chosen. Also, include a preferred date to present.

When I first saw this site I was really missing my partner and I drew a sketch of her from memory. Now I like to play a game with this where two people draw each other from memory and then exchange drawings. Drawings are art, right? I know this is a commercial site and I'm not even sure it's flash, but I dig it. I wish, however, that there were a wiki component to it. That would be my development of the Turbulence Apartment as well - a socially negotiated cloud of mapping rules, perhaps even probability based, so words mapped by degree of consensus and not always to the same place. Emily is right that it's lame that "gay" maps to the closet. It's also sad that some words don't map at all when they clearly fit. Not flash... Eyebeam open source. Not a Flash website but it's about Flash. This is a flash over GoogleMaps applications environment I think. The coverpage calls it a Flash to Google glue. Another Eyebeam open source product. I guess my 5th website is not a flash website either. I could talk about Eyebeam itself and its approach to tech and open source. If you want me to discuss one from your list I'd choose www.jodi.org |
