Pictures and Sounds from the Sounding Dome Sauna Project

Jan-Erik Andersson and I have been busy working on the Sounding Dome Sauna, one of several artist-designed and constructed saunas  that are part of the SaunaLab project.  These saunas will open to the public on June 1, as part of the City of Turku Finland's cultural capital 2011 activities.

Here are a few photos of me working on the sauna - Jan-Erik has designed and constructed the structure of this wild sauna, and my part of the project is adding the sound, both inside and outside.  The sound is driven by both the heat and humidity of the inside - with seperate kinds of sounds during cooling and heating, and also various sounds that are triggered by water being thrown on the heater, etc.  There are sounds both inside (various meditative sounds, that react the the cooling/heating cycles of the interior temperature....), and outside (speakers in the metal "horns" at the top of the sauna, that are triggered with the sudden gush of steam when water is thrown on the heater - these sounds evoke the wild exterior of the sauna).

I've got more images - I'll get those posted here as soon as I can......

Here are some samples (the sounds inside and outside are specifically mixed to these spaces, the acoustics of the horns, etc. - so these sounds are quite a bit different in the actual sauna, but this will give you an idea:

Here is an interview with Jan-Erik and I that Saunalab did this past fall:
